- Should I order the Cabled or Wireless EASE Vehicle Interface? -

You’re considering the purchase, or have already decided to purchase an EASE Diagnostics PC Scan Tool…but now you have another choice to make; do I go cabled, or wireless?  As with anything, there are benefits and drawbacks to both methods.

EASE Cabled Vehicle Interface

The EASE Diagnostics cable interface is the most durable interface on the market, with steel construction throughout, making it ideally suited for the shop environment. Its compact size makes it easy to use and store. Performing on the road diagnostics from the front seat of a test vehicle with its short cable allows you to eliminate “seat clutter”, keeping the driving area clear.

Although less expensive than its wireless cousin, one of the drawbacks of this device is cable length. To reach a vehicle parked on the other end of the shop, or outdoors (when using a desktop PC) you’ll need a long serial cable to reach that area. This problem becomes worse when using a USB cable, in that USB communications are limited to about 15 feet. The addition of the six-foot OBD-II cable would allow you to reach a maximum of 21 feet. If using a laptop PC, this in not as issue because of its portability, but often times, a technician would prefer to leave the laptop in a centralized location from which to work.

Benefits

Compact size makes it easy to use and store
Durable, steel and aluminum case
Less expensive than EASE Wireless Vehicle Interface
Versions available that connect to either the USB or Serial communications port of PC.

Potential Drawback

Cable length - The vehicle under test must be parked where it can be reached by the cables that gets attached between the PC and the vehicle's diagnostic connector.

GM LAN data parameters can only be viewed at a limited speed with the Cabled Vehicle Interface.  GM LAN high speed data, GM LAN bi-directional controls and single wire CAN are not supported (Wireless Vehicle Interface –WU package required)  GM enhanced KWP is not supported.

EASE Wireless Vehicle Interface

The EASE wireless interface is also housed in a steel case for maximum durability, and is one of our most popular items. Using this device eliminates the need for cables between the test vehicle and the PC. Being a true “RF” unit, this interface does not require line-of-sight to operate, and had an effective range of up to several hundred feet. Greater flexibility lets you increases your productivity through easier connection to vehicles in any bay or areas outside the service center.

EASE wireless works in ANY environment, and its IP addressing makes it less subject to interference from other wireless components or systems in the shop, such as a wireless alignment machine.

Shop environments can be tough on equipment, but the EASE wireless can save you money, by eliminating potential cable damage or having to replace cables due to normal wear and tear. In addition, the system will virtually eliminate cable hazards that can cause tripping and/or vehicle body damage.

One of the drawbacks of the EASE wireless system is that it costs more than a conventional cabled interface.  It’s also not as compact and may require extra wireless accessories to function correctly.  And although very durable and virtually trouble free, with thousands in use every day, it may, on occasion, require additional technical support, due to the high tech nature of the product.

Benefits

Mobility and freedom to be productive from any location throughout the shop since using this device eliminates the need for cables between the test vehicle and the PC.
Work comfortably inside -- leave bad weather outside
Allows technician or customer to look at data without having to go to the vehicle
Allows high-volume shops to move customers through quickly
Allows one trained technician to perform diagnostics while other technicians work directly on the vehicle -- reducing testing costs
Reduces liability from people tripping on cables and vehicle body damage caused by cables between the vehicle and PC
Convenience of not having to run a cable from each vehicle to the PC
Allows the scanning of a vehicle that will not fit in a bay or is up on a lift
GM LAN normal and high speed data parameters, GM LAN bi-directional controls and GM single wire CAN are supported with these packages.  GM enhanced KWP is not supported.

Potential Drawbacks

Slightly more expensive than EASE Cabled Vehicle Interface.
You will need to purchase extra wireless accessories if your PC does not currently have 802.11b wireless capability.
